MAKEUP OF THE DAY | Natural Makeup for Prom

Prom is around the corner and it’s time to finalize your makeup look.

As a freelance makeup artist, I have to be in tune with the latest trends and the wants of my clients.

This year, the biggest requests I’m getting are natural makeup and winged eyeliner.

Because prom-goers are often under the age of 18, the natural makeup look is perfect and prevents the possibility of looking like a clown.

Here’s the look I put together for one of my clients:IMG_0545

Top Drugstore Lipsticks for Spring and Summer 2014

Spring is here and so are bright lippies!

Pinks and corals will always be on trend for Spring and Summer, but if you want to be a little more daring this year, you’ve got to dip into orange and purple. Both colors are all over the runways and fashion magazines.

At first, these bright colored lipsticks might be intimidating, but if you choose the right shade (and don’t go full on night-time smoky eye during the day along with it) you should be fine.

Recently, I’ve had quite a few requests to share my top drugstore lipstick colors for spring. It was really hard to choose but I went with the colors I reach for the most. I tried to keep it under 10 but you know me, I love my lippies, so there are two “honorable mentions.” 🙂

Check out the swatches of these beautiful colors! Can you guess which is which?

MAKEUP HAUL | ULTA 21 Days of Beauty Spring 2014 Haul

Sephora’s VIB sale wasn’t the only parasite on my bank account…

ULTA’s 21 Days of Beauty was three weeks of beauty product bliss. Each day there was a different product on sale, sometimes up to 50% off regular price. Additionally, several brands were offering really cool free gifts with purchase (varying $ amounts) and certain stores were hosting special events.

Needless to say, I couldn’t help myself. Here’s what I picked up:

Shine No More! Benefit the POREfessional Agent Zero Shine

Shiny can be good.

Glitter, sequins, a clean car, all shiny things that are appealing.

Shiny can be good, but not on your face.

I’ve always been one to get oily and I’ve tried pretty much everything to help combat it. My latest attempt is trying Benefit’s the POREfessional Agent Zero Shine. It’s a powder that claims to reduce shine when applied under or over your makeup.

Here’s what it looks like:IMG_9682

It comes with it’s own brush, that tucks away neatly at the bottom of the container. The powder itself is a beige color, not exactly translucent but that wasn’t a concern since it matches my skin tone.  IMG_9684

It retails for $30 and can be purchased from Sephora, Ulta and the Benefit website. Is it worth $30? Well, I decided to put the product to the test and show it in action.

Makeup of the Day | Lime Crime + Urban Decay Vice 2 + the Fun Palette

Lime Crime how I love thee.

Lime Crime does funky, opaque lip colors like no other. Their scent is amazing, they go on smooth and they stay in place, eliminating the need for lip liner. I have eight shades (so far!) but my latest favorite is Chinchilla, a grey with purple undertones.

Here’s how I wore it for the first time:

I chose to focus the attention on the lip color by keeping the eye makeup pretty simple.

While there were a couple of people at work that asked if I was okay or told me I looked “gothic” but the majority of the responses were positive. My peers seemed to dig the funky, edgier look as much as I did.

Why I love this color? Well, obviously because it’s purplish (sort of), but also because it’s a way of embracing the edgy black lipstick trend in a more wearable tone.

Sunday FUNday | Urban Decay’s the Fun Palette

It’s Sunday Funday and what better way to spend it than with Urban Decay’s the Fun Palette.

Let me begin by mentioning that I own nine Urban Decay eyeshadow palettes, but this is still one of my favorites.

As with most Urban Decay eyeshadow palettes, the packaging is gorgeous. It’s one palette that I don’t mind leaving out on my vanity because it’s nice to look at and I honestly find myself reaching for it so often.

IMG_9661

The palette includes six eyeshadows and an eyeliner pencil (which it appears I’ve misplaced). It has a decent sized mirror and a magnetic closure so it’s ideal for travel and on-the-go application.

The colors included are (from left to right, top to bottom):

  • Woodstock
  • Baked
  • Uzi
  • Sin
  • Flipside
  • Psychedelic Sister

IMG_9662

Woodstock, Baked, Sin and Psychedelic Sister are all available for purchase as single eyeshadows on Urban Decay’s website for $18 each (ouch!). Uzi and Flipside are not available as single eye shadows and once I swatched them, I understood how they would draw people to this palette.

The swatches are laid out as they are in the palette and there are two sets of them: the left are without a primer and the right are with Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion. As with most eyeshadows, starting with a primer gives you much more vibrant and long lasting color payoff.

IMG_9657

This palette is one of my favorites because each color is so unique and unlike anything I have in my current collection. I reach for Woodstock, Baked (I mean, WOW) and Flipside most often.

If you’re afraid of using funky colors this is definitely a great palette for you to have fun with (hehe) because the colors are muted and with the color Sin you can really make them wearable.  Also, the price and the fact that it’s just a palette of six really makes this less of a risky investment than the Electric Palette.

Although this palette is no longer available for sale through the Urban Decay website, you can find it on eBay or All Cosmetics Wholesale, which is where I purchased mine for only $19.99 (MSRP $34).
